Portamentous

Steve Welsh, performing as Portamentous, is an ebullient newcomer to Dublin’s creative community. Most recently from Detroit, and previously a longtime Brooklynite, Steve has a past life as a working jazz and classical artist (saxophones and woodwinds), but has always been creatively omnivorous. His influences range from Babbitt, Basinski, and Reich to MBV, Squarepusher, and Floating Points (with a soft spot for late 90s jungle and Detroit techno).

Steve cites the long stretches of lockdown isolation as the catalyst for turning a longtime interest in analog and modular synthesis into a full blown obsession. Having converted his flat’s modest guest room into a fully-kitted Synthlab, he hopes to release his first LP under the Portamentous moniker sometime this year. You can also catch him spinning vinyl and playing saxophones in various clubs about Dublin.
