Tadhg Kinsella

Tadhg Kinsella is a classically trained percussionist and Live electronics musician. They started playing piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) aged 7 and later received a scholarship to study cello. In their early teens, Tadhg then began studying percussion at the RIAM. In 2018 they graduated from his BA in Music Performance Degree (percussion) under Jonathan Herbert; with music electronics as their second study under Jonathan Nangle.

 

Dyslexic and non-binary queer Tadhg promotes/highlights accessibility and inclusivity throughout their works/projects. They are passionately involved in the Irish arts and queer scene. Strives to continue to contribute as much as possible to the community.

 

Tadhg has taken part in many international workshops in the United States, United Kingdom, Columbia, Germany and Sweden. Some notable masterclasses include those with Evelyn Glennie (soloist), Chris Lamb (Principal Percussionist New York Philharmonic) Eriko Daimo (marimba soloist) and Thomas Kolor (Contemporary soloist). As a soloist, they have performed in various competitions including the Flax Trust Music Bursary and Irish Freemasons Young Musician of the Year. They have also played as a soloist with orchestras such as Trinity Orchestra and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.

 

In orchestral percussion Tadhg has freelanced with various orchestras and ensembles,

including the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and Aurora

Symphony Orchestra (Sweden). As an avid chamber musician, they have performed in multiple locations around the world some of which were at New York University (USA), Aaron Copland School of Music (USA) and University of Valle (Colombia). They won the RIAM Leo Gibney award for chamber music and silver medal at the ESB Feis Ceoil chamber group award. They performed the World Premiere of an Irish commission by Evangelia Rigaki as a member of the RIAM Percussion Ensemble directed by Richard O’Donnell.

 

In electronics Tadhg has established themself as an exciting emerging contemporary/experimental composer/performer. As an electronic musician they have been awarded multiple prizes/awards for their in depth use and knowledge of hardware & modular synthesis. Recent projects highlighting their electronic work from 2022 include Dublin Fringe Festival, "FYLKINGEN" with Ensemble Getögon (Stockholm, Sweden), Culture night (Meeting house square) and "Temporary Pleasures” (the Complex, Dublin).

 

Founder of Dublin Modular which is a non-profit organisation primarily hosting live

electronic music meetups, workshops and performances throughout the year in Dublin City.

Incorporating an educational/learning platform for experimental and electronic music hardware and software devices. Tadhg leads various free workshops throughout the year to make electronic music more accessible and inclusive for all interested. Dublin modular was set up with the idea of creating a space for electronic artistic expression, appreciation and networking for people living in Ireland. Along with the concept of being set up, managed and governed by artists. The aim of establishing a DIY community like Dublin Modular was to help contribute to the continuous development and growth of art culture in Dublin/Ireland.

 

Involved in a project at the Royal Irish Academy of Music “Le Cheile”, as ensemble director and electronic equipment manager. The idea behind the project is creating an orchestra where ability is not a limiting factor. The musicians involved have a wide variety of disabilities including down syndrome, autism and cerebral palsy. Using all kinds of cutting-edge musical technology and equipment from Ipad apps to wireless motion midi controllers to create music.Tadhg Kinsella is a multimedia artist focusing on percussion and musical electronics.

Tadhg has been a semi-finalist and finalist in competitions such as Irish Freemasons Young Musician of the Year, Maura Dowdall Concerto and Flax Trust Music Awards Northern Ireland.
